The mission of the Arthritis Foundation is to improve lives through leadership in the prevention,
control and cure of arthritis and related diseases. Arthritis continues to be the nation’s
leading cause of disability. Fortunately, the Arthritis Foundation is the nation’s leader in
helping the 46 million Americans with doctor-diagnosed arthritis take greater control through
its commitment to public health, public policy and research. The Arthritis Foundation reaches
out to the millions of men, women and children with arthritis by providing community-based
public health programs, advocating for changes in public policy and raising funds for nationwide
research that moves us closer to a cure.
The perceptions about arthritis vary, but the numbers don't lie:
- Arthritis is one of the most prevalent chronic health problems and the nation's leading cause of disability
- 46 million Americans have doctor-diagnosed arthritis and chronic joint symptoms
- 300,000 people with arthritis are children
- Arthritis costs the US economy nearly $128 billion annually in lost wages
- There are more than 100 forms of arthritis
